Is Fashion Superficial?

by Aliyah Semillano

"They say don’t judge a book by its cover, but in truth, the cover is what catches your eye and introduces you to what the book is about."

They say that what matters is what’s on the inside. This phrase may be cliché for others, but this alone has caused the biggest controversy within the fashion industry. Yet, people who say this view fashion from the outside and refuse to see the industry in a different light. The light I see it in. It may not be appealing, it may not make sense to you, but nevertheless, if what really matters is on the inside, then come and join me in discovering the “inside” of fashion.

I believe that fashion, just like painting, poetry, and music, is an art form that allows people to express themselves. Designers are the authors, the painters, and the composers. While the canvases are the models and mannequins that these artists use to present their creations to the world. Having the warmth for fashion is not limited to those who are seen as feminine and good-looking in the eyes of society. Fashion lends the truth to the statements, “love yourself for who you are” and “all sizes are beautiful,” as the use of various styles allows you to accentuate the qualities you are most proud of and to love yourself even more.

Now we’ve arrived at the topic of trends. For the longest time, fashion trends and “staying in style” have long been reviled, and I’ve never understood why. Trends are the reason why I fell in love with the industry in the first place. I’ve always been the type of person who gets bored with the same routine after a while. Even if it is the most exciting, the repetition bores me. That’s why I love fashion, trends break this repetition as they come and go and offer something new to obsess about every season in order to keep all the fashionistas on their feet.

Aside from the common idea that people follow trends because of peer pressure, trends break the status quo by offering new and exciting styles, colors, and designs. Trends aren’t regulations that have to be completely followed to avoid being considered “outdated”. I see trends as guidelines and concepts that help me decide what to wear within the morning additionally to my very own style. It keeps me intrigued and curious about what might be next, the possibilities are endless!

Fashion, despite its misconceptions, is something that anyone can be a part of. Whether you’re a young lady who’s comfortable dressing up in a much masculine silhouette or vice versa. Long before the rest of the world was ready to embrace it, this industry has always encouraged people to embrace their individuality and express themselves as they truly are. We are all role models for our own personal style, and if I had one piece of advice for you, it would be to remember that every step you take is just as important as the next step Bella Hadid takes on the runway at Paris Fashion Week.

The path you create for yourself is your runway, and if you wear your style with confidence and finesse, you will be admired by all. So to all those who say that fashion is superficial as it only focuses on the physical appearance, in my opinion, fashion is what brings out the person you are on the inside for the world to see. It’s what makes passers-by, who will never know you, get a glimpse into your soul through a mere glance at your outfit.
