The streets of Paris have been ablaze with excitement this past week, but nothing could match Mugler’s 2023 runway debut. After months of virtual presentations due to the pandemic, creative director Casey Cadwallader wanted to make sure this show would be one for the books by hosting it in the midst of the Parisian couture show’s return to live shows.
And what a show it was!
Cinematic, alluring, and exuding confidence, Mugler’s Fall/Winter 2023 show was a tribute to its founder Thierry Mugler. According to the creative director, Casey Cadwallader, he aimed to bring the essence of a fashion film onto the runway with the presentation. He shared that after exploring Mugler’s expression through film in recent years, the idea of sticking to a traditional runway format was no longer an option.
Guests were transported to the outskirts of the city, to the Parc de la Villette where they were welcomed into a spacious arena. Mugler treated them to a one-of-a-kind, genre-defying display that was perfectly suited to the brand’s image. The show was a collision of commerce and haute couture, a unique blend of “see now, buy now” and high drama. It was a nod to George Michael’s classic “Too Funky” video, featuring stars like Eva Herzigová, Linda Evangelista, Tyra Banks, and many more. The show was a star-studded affair, featuring Mugler’s favorite models such as Amber Valetta, Shalom Harlow, Irina Shayk, Paloma Elsesser, Anok Yai, Dominique Jackson, Debra Shaw, and more, as well as performance artists like Alejandra Ghersi (a.k.a. Arca) and comedian Ziwe, whowere just a few of the stars who graced the 50-meter catwalk, followed by a camera crew and then projected onto a giant screen.
Casey Cadwallader took the collection in a new direction, with a focus on adding more volume, texture, and streetwear elements to the designs. Instead of incorporating gowns, he explored the idea of deconstructing formalwear and incorporating its elements in other pieces like tuxedos, minidresses, bodysuits, and bustiers, as seen in Shalom Harlow’s outfit. Additionally, the brand is working on developing a new category, shoes, which Cadwallader promises will be available soon.
The audience was mesmerized by a thrilling performance accompanied by a pulsing soundtrack featuring Megan Thee Stallion’s “Body” and 070 Shake’s latest hit “Cocoon”.
When the show came to the finale, the ’90s supermodels and fashionable crowd took over the stage, inviting the audience to join in the festivities and dance the night away.
Featuring a diverse cast of models, with a range of ages, sizes, and ethnicities represented on the runway. This was a refreshing change from the homogenous casts that are often seen at fashion shows.
Overall, Mugler’s comeback show was a huge success, with the fashion world praising the collection for its mix of nostalgia and innovation. The brand has definitely left a lasting impression on the fashion world, and we can’t wait to see what’s next.
